Welded Hydraulic Cylinder Design

We design compact, high-strength welded hydraulic cylinders to CETOP RP 58H and to customer specifications, backed by full rod buckling and burst pressure calculations for CAT3 and third-party approval. Welded construction is our recommendation where space is tight and the duty is heavy.

Welded Hydraulic Cylinder Design

What Is a Welded Hydraulic Cylinder?

In a welded cylinder the end cap is welded directly to the barrel rather than clamped by external tie-rods. This gives a slimmer, more robust cylinder that copes well with shock loading and higher working pressures, and it is the natural choice where a bulky tie-rod envelope simply will not fit.

When to Choose Welded Construction

Welded cylinders suit mobile plant, marine equipment and heavy industrial duties where space and weight are at a premium. Where in-service serviceability and standard interchangeable mountings matter more, a tie-rod (ISO 6020) cylinder may suit better, and for the highest forces a bolted (ISO 6022) cylinder. We design all three, so our advice is not tied to one method.

Our Welded Cylinder Design Service

Using SolidWorks Design Premium, we model the complete cylinder – barrel, welded end cap, gland, piston, rod, mountings and ports – and produce the weld-detailed manufacturing and general arrangement drawings needed to build it. Our in-depth understanding of materials, welding and structural integrity goes into every design to make sure it is fit for purpose and practical to manufacture.

Calculations & Verification

Every cylinder can be backed by detailed engineering calculations. We carry out rod buckling and burst pressure calculations as standard and can prepare full calculation packages for CAT3 checkers or third-party inspectors including ABS, DNV and Lloyd's Register – suitable for regulated and safety-critical projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a welded hydraulic cylinder?

A welded hydraulic cylinder has its end cap welded directly to the barrel instead of being held by external tie-rods, making it more compact and better suited to high pressures and shock loading.

When should I choose welded rather than tie-rod construction?

Welded cylinders suit mobile, marine and heavy-duty applications where space is limited and pressures are high. Tie-rod (ISO 6020) cylinders are easier to service and use standard interchangeable mountings, so we will advise on the best fit for your duty.

Can you provide calculations for third-party approval?

Yes. We produce rod buckling and burst pressure calculations and full calculation packages suitable for CAT3 checkers and third-party inspectors such as ABS, DNV and Lloyd's Register.
